Yin Yoga
Ritual Spotlight: Yin Yoga
While the word “Yoga” is Sanskrit, originating in India, “Yin” comes from the Chinese lineages. It is a Taoist concept, which points to the receptive, feminine energy, represented by the dark shadowy side of the mountain. Yin only exists in its relationship to Yang, which is the bright light of heaven, the energy of the masculine and the upward ascent, and vice versa. Neither energy is inherently “good” or “bad”, but rather, disharmony arises when these forces are out of balance.
Yin Yoga is a practice of slowing down in static postures that affect connective tissue, our nervous system and meridian lines. Yin is a practice that can teach us to slow down, reflect and soften.
Pranayama
Ritual Spotlight: Pranayama.
The Sanskrit word pranayama is composed of two parts. “Prana” translates as breath, vigor, energy, power, vital energy or life force. Prana is the subtle energy that flows through the body in nadis or energy channels. These pathways move and circulate prana throughout the entire body. “Yama” translates to control, restraint, regulation, or discipline.
Therefore, pranayama is often translated as breath control or the regulation of life force energy. A more thorough definition would be: Pranayama is a collection of different types of yogic breathing practices used to influence the flow of prana in the body, to promote physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
